BlueViews - Sierra Bonita Grill
I really enjoy hanging out with my parents on the weekends. Friday nights we sometimes go exploring new restaurants. The Luks love to eat! Sierra Bonita Grill recently opened not too far from my parents’ house. On 7th Street, the restaurant is just southeast of the Exxon on Glendale Avenue. It was relatively crowded when we walked in and smelled GREAT. We were all hungry. No problem, the hostess seated us without a second’s delay at a corner booth by the kitchen. Our waitress Kathy was totally on top of service. Attentive with a huge dimpled smile, she was quick with our questions, orders, drink refills, and frequently checked back to see if we needed anything. The food was an exceptional value. We highly recommend: Azteca Soup (Oaxacan chile broth with chicken, avocado, cilantro, queso panela, lime and crispy corn tortilla strips) - Cup $3, Bowl $7 - If you’re a light eater, a bowl of soup is hearty and filling. Carne Asada (Grilled marinated 10 oz. shoulder tender steak with charro beans, guacamole, grilled mexican spring onions, indian salsa and flour tortillas) - $18 Pork Shank (Slow braised shank with hatch green chile sauce, skillet potatoes with onions and bacon) - $18 Grilled Halibut (It was the night’s special and my scattered recollection of its description certainly won’t do it justice… it had a mango sauce and came with spinach and tomatoes… Delicious!) Pecan Crusted Rainbow Trout (Served with skillet potatoes with onions and bacon. Topped with maple butter sauce and roasted red bell peppers) - $17 Crepes (with carmelized pineapple, spiced pecans, caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream) - $6 The restaurant manager Nate Hopper chatted with us as we waited for Kathy to run our bill. As they settle in and get more established, there are plans to open a prep kitchen and hold a "Tamale Drive" with proceeds going to a children’s charity. Now how cool would it be to get the community involved to "Drive Fast 4 Kids with Cancer" every holiday season with totally different kinds of drives? 2005 we’re breaking Guiness World Records at Bondurant… 2006 we’re mixing corn masa?! LOL whatever we end up doing, you know we’ll be having fun.
